Digital Contrast Procedures

Using a safe, water-soluble contrast dye, these X-ray procedures provide a roadmap of your urinary tract to pinpoint blockages, strictures, and reflux.

RGU (Retrograde Urethrogram)

  • Evaluates male urethra for strictures
  • Identifies causes of weak urine flow
  • Crucial post-trauma or before surgery

MCU (Micturating Cystourethrogram)

  • Checks for Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)
  • Diagnoses cause of recurrent pediatric UTIs
  • Evaluates bladder emptying function

IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram)

  • Visualizes entire kidney & ureter structure
  • Detects kidney stones and exact location
  • Identifies urinary tract blockages or tumors

RGU + MCU Combined

  • Complete lower urinary tract assessment
  • Often done together for complex urology cases
  • Thorough evaluation of strictures and bladder

Contrast X-Rays: What to Expect

Contrast Dye

A safe, iodine-based contrast dye is used to make your urinary tract visible on X-rays.

Procedure Experience

RGU/MCU involves passing dye through a small catheter. It may feel slightly uncomfortable but is quick.

Duration

RGU/MCU takes about 20-30 mins. IVP can take 1 to 2 hours as we take images over time.

Strict Preparation Rules

  • Urine Culture is Mandatory (RGU/MCU)

You MUST provide a recent Urine Culture report showing "Sterile/No Growth". Procedures will not be done with active infections.

  • Fasting & Bowel Prep (For IVP ONLY)

IVP requires fasting for 6 hours and taking prescribed laxatives the night before to clear bowel gas.

  • Allergies & Creatinine

For IVP, a recent Serum Creatinine blood test is required. Inform us of any asthma or iodine allergies.
